Ignorance is Bliss

Image
"The oldest, easiest to swallow idea was that the earth was man's personal property, a combination of garden, zoo, bank vault and energy source, placed at our disposal to be consumed, ornamented or pulled apart as we wished" (Thomas 915). In modern society, we take our environment and our surroundings for granted. As Lewis Thomas discusses in his essay, "Natural Man" he exemplifies the idea that humans don't understand their position and duty that they play in nature. He states that the easiest role that we take on as humans is dissecting nature in every which way we please. I believe that 40 years later, we are still following the same concept and it has deeply shown in our environment. We utilize nature for our pleasure and consume it, thinking that there is an endless supply. We need to start understanding, that this is not true. Our world is deteriorating piece by piece and this problem is not getting enough acknowledgment. The problem is ge

More than one English?!

Image
Being able to communicate with others gives me a sense of power. Whether it may be my communicating skills at school or my speech at home with my family, I felt a sense of belonging. Growing up, I was taught two languages and heard two other languages regularly. I learned my first language which is Tamil through my grandma, and English through my parents. Switching between these languages happens very often and unconsciously. Growing up, I was exposed to a lot of informal speech and my parents would change between English and Tamil every sentence. Living in India for the first year of my life exposed me to a lot of dialects and slangs that changed on a daily basis. I would hear my grandma conversing in a language called Kannada, and I begin picking up words and pieces that still to this day can speak and recognize. Having a variety of languages spoken to me confused me and started to become a challenge. As I began to speak my first words, it was a fusion of my mother tongue, Tamil, an

Metacognitive Reflection

1)As a writer I think that I have improved in certain aspects. The main thing that helped me was going over notes and comments that Ms. Nagi left on previous papers. This helped me understand what I was doing wrong and how I could improve in that specific area on my next writing piece. 2)The area that I have improved in is pulling quotes to support my argument or thesis. Before this class, my quotes were too long and I was not cutting extra information out. This class helped me understand that only important and relevant information should be in the quotes and not extra fluff.I focused on the important parts and it helped me strengthen my evidence.   3)The area that needs further improvement is connecting my ideas to the bigger picture. I tend to analyze my quotes, but forget to pull them back in and analyze how this helps my thesis or claim of the passage. I think the way to improve this would be by reviewing my past work and seeing how I could make sure to revisit the thesis

People Never Change

Image
Society has continued to be hypocritical ever since day one. We might think that over time people learn and things would change, but nowadays the hypocrisy of people still prevail. In Mark Twain's novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn we are able to view the vast amount of hypocrisy that runs throughout their society and wherever Huck's adventure takes him. Twain begins by satirizing this idea when he introduces us to the Widow Douglas. Every day she reminds Huck that he should always pray and be a good child, but never realizes the irony of her own actions. She has the idea that black individuals are lower to her and should remain slaves. Twain continues to present us with others such as Miss Watson, Mr. Phelps, and Mrs. Phelps. The Phelps pray with Jim and feed him, but keep him locked up because he is a runaway slave. Now if we examine the world, situations are less severe because of the ideals we are embedded with. Isolating and criticizing others hasn't disap

Reputation whattt?

Image
How are reputation and image important? Well according to the civilians of the Salem society in, The Crucible , it's a very serious matter. These crazy and abnormal people will even die to protect their name in society. Let's start with the infamous Abigail Williams. This young adolescent child believed that it was okay to provide false information and evidence in court. Like how low do you need to go to keep a good name? Well, we have the perfect person to examine. This girl enrages me. Who attempts to drink a charm and cast a spell on a woman just to steal her husband. Well, she purposefully lies to her uncle about Tituba making her do crazy things, and also lies in court about Mary Warren making her do things. She tries to make sure that people think of her as an innocent woman who has not put out in the world yet. She also says, "I will not black my face for any of them" (Miller 140). Abigail lies to defend her name in the community that she lives in. Another w

Betty: Tituba? Tituba: Yes dear. Betty: Can you really conjure up Robert's spirit? Tituba: I don't know dear. I shall try my best. Why do you ask? (Tituba walks around to Betty, and guides her to the table). Betty: I loved this boy, and he loved me too Tituba. Whenever I was helping papa out in the back he would walk by and wave hello. Tituba: Tell me more child. Betty: Promise you won't tell. (Abigail enters). Abigail: What nonsense you speak Betty. Uncle Parris will skin ya. Tituba: Now, now child don't speak so harsh to her. Shes still young. You must go to Goody Proctor's house and finish your duties. Mr. Proctor was asking of you. (Abigail is shocked but controls herself). Abigail: Ok then. I shall see you in the evening. Goodbye, now Tituba. Goodbye Betty. (Abigail rushes out the door leaving Tituba and Betty alone again). Tituba: Child, finish your story. Betty: He came by the house every day now Tituba. I swear on mother. Tituba: Silly child.

So Columbus day huh?

Image
So this man called, uhh I think it was Christopher Columbus landed on America, and because of that GOT A DAY NAMED AFTER HIM.  Man, no one told me that we got a day named after us just because we landed in America. If so where's my day because I arrived on America November 16, 2002 (it's my birthday if you didn't know). Wouldn't that be so cool to get a whole day where people celebrate you even though you didn't really accomplish anything because "the 15th-century Italian explorer still got his own national holiday" ( Yan  1). So why do we really give credit to this man who didn't really do anything that was groundbreaking, because then everyone would be receiving their own special day to acknowledge themselves? So this Christopher Columbus set foot on America October 8, 1492. There were many many many Native Americans before him who probably were all like no god please noooooo!!!!!! Columbus not only got tons of credit for arriving but als
