So Columbus day huh?

So this man called, uhh I think it was Christopher Columbus landed on America, and because of that GOT A DAY NAMED AFTER HIM.  Man, no one told me that we got a day named after us just because we landed in America. If so where's my day because I arrived on America November 16, 2002 (it's my birthday if you didn't know). Wouldn't that be so cool to get a whole day where people celebrate you even though you didn't really accomplish anything because "the 15th-century Italian explorer still got his own national holiday" (Yan 1). So why do we really give credit to this man who didn't really do anything that was groundbreaking, because then everyone would be receiving their own special day to acknowledge themselves?

So this Christopher Columbus set foot on America October 8, 1492. There were many many many Native Americans before him who probably were all like no god please noooooo!!!!!!

Columbus not only got tons of credit for arriving but also brought many diseases upon these Native Americans, and made them suffer. He brought a disease that spread and obliterated most of the people that were already in the Americas. They were almost wiped out and were left to struggle. This is why I believe that we should honor the indigenous people and have a national holiday named after them. After all, they did most of the hard work of finding and starting their lives in America.

EVERYONE should learn about the hard struggles that many Native Americans had to battle because they deserve to be honored and praised.

  1. I loved the sarcastic tone of your blog and the way you described Columbus and his accomplishments. I found it especially interesting how you made the connection to everyone getting their own holiday just for the "arrival" in America. If there was an Indigenous People's Day in place of Columbus Day, do you think it would prompt people to learn more about the past struggles of Native Americans? Or would people see it as just another day off from school?

  2. Overall, I enjoyed reading this satirical style of writing and your view on the controversy of Columbus Day. One of the points you touched on was that people should learn about the tough struggles Native Americans went though. Since some people are unaware of the things Columbus did and were never informed, by changing Columbus Day to Indigenous People's Day, what would incentivize people to actually dive deeper into this topic?
